I know where the two big wires go. I have one from the battery and one to the load but the two smaller connectors on top have me stumped.

A perplexing question, and it's been a while for me and solenoids...

Isn't one of the small terminals marked with a +? It might depending on the make.

One wire comes from the ignition, which is 12 volts. Depending on the type, the ground is picked up from the chassis mounting bolts, or the other small terminal.

With the chassis ground type, the other small terminal got the 12 volts across it for the coil power, until the car started, then the coil power came from the ballast resisitor.

You can connect the battery to the two small terminals, and if it clicks, then one is hot and one is ground. If no click then use the metal as ground and touch the small terminals one at a time to get the click.

well as you have proabably guessed one big wire goes from the battery to the solenoind and the other from the battery to the starter motor casing bolt itself. As for the other two If they are not clearly marked one will be you live to engaged to coil ( which commes live when you turn the key to start ) and the other will be you earth/ground wire for the coil. If you have a small test light, ask a friend or loved one to turn the key and check which wire is which, but normally it shouldnt matter which way around the smaller wires go, as the field inside the coil can be generated either way around
