My favorite book, hands-down, is Coraline. (By Neil Gaiman.)
I read it at 12:00 midnight, and it actually sent shivers down my spine. It is told with such delicacy, and has such intricate details, that it automatically draws you in. When Gaiman describes the "other mother's" black button eyes, I literally freaked out. Oh, and when she was eating the black beetles.
Coraline is about a 10-year old girl, who is bored and misunderstood. She wants to stand out, and be unique, but no one seems to understand what she wants and who she is. When her parents move into a flat, with 12 doors that open and 1 that doesn't, she ventures into the unopenable door...into another world. There she finds her "other mother", a monster who wants to keep her forever.....to eat her soul, strip her of all that makes her human. To escape, she must rescue the spirits of the three children behind the mirror, and her parents who have been kidnapped.
IT'S REALLY GOOD!
