a platypus is a weird little animal, when it was discovered in the 1700, everyone though it was a hoaks put together by a Asian taxidermist using a duck, beaver and one other animal to make this thing. The scientific name Ornithorhy anatinus means: bird nose and the common name means: flat foot. Platypuses are semi aquatic animals that eat worms, crayfish and shrimp. they can be found in large body waters but mainly in rivers and streams. Earily settlers called the platypus a "Water Mole" They are about 1 to just over 2 kilograms in weight and as long as 30 to 40 centimeters. The males are about 1/3 larger than the females and they're all toothless. they're bodies have extra bones in they're pelvic structure because they're legs are on the sides of they're bodies instead of under like all other animals. They lay eggs instead if live birth, live just under the water edge in burros and are nocturnal. America was introduced to the platypus in 1939 by National Geographic. the nose and fat tails are rubber/ leathery type and they don't use they're tail for propulsion, just for steering along with their back legs.

A mammal with webbed feet and a tail like a beaver. The female platypus lays eggs and incubates them inside her pouch, they're marsupials, like kangaroos. They young nurse inside this pouch. The platypus has a beak like a duck and a poisonous spike on its back legs (Maybe only the male). Look up more info and a picture of a platypus at: http://www.pbs.org/kratts/world/aust/plat/
