How can i get my name out?

I've been writing a lot lately(poetry and a sci-fi novel) and i want to publish some of my work(exspecially poetry). how would i go about getting my name out there without going towards a vanity press. I would really like to avoid a vanity press if possible...but is there any other way to get my name out there without costing an arm and a leg?

Try making a name for yourself by sending your work to magazines and online contests. Editors and Agents view these things and if you do good there, when you send your stuff to an editor, you have some creditials under your belt, this always helps in the publishing process. Then brag like mad to your family and friends so they buy your book.

Become popular on Myspace - post free chapters or poems there for people to see.

Enter as many writing contests as possible - some offer publishing as a prize, and prizes can look good on a resume.

Post on websites that share writing, and try to make contacts, such as people who are already published. They can 'put in a word' for you, so to speak, and also inform you on the details you need to know.

Go to Literary Journals on the web. Choose some of the small ones, and send them four (4) pieces of your best short work. These editors have less to choose from and you have a better chance of getting your work read.

Co-host a football game and flash the crowd,do a realty show and come across as a dumb slut, or the old fashioned way go kill someone famous.

u can visit different writers' sites such as writers.com or critiquecircle.com and submit first few chapters for the writers to review and see how they feel. also u can try authorspost.com for posting ur work also try www.inkify.com. u can always try different book clubs' sites and try starting some blog about u and ur novel
