A few times my daughter was lying there getting her diaper changed or lying on the couch. One minute she was smiling the next she spreads her arms wide with her fingers spread in the moro reflex,... it looked involuntary and she looked terrified. when her arms relaxed she started crying. it scared me, my boyfriend and my mother each time someone saw it. my pediatrician says this is normal for infants when they get scared,.... nothing triggers it, it just seems so scary for me too.
anyone ever experience this?

it isnt a matter of trust, my baby trusts and is comforted by me,...it scares me because it seems to be triggered by nothing...
moms please tell me about the experience

In actual fact, the baby is experiencing a kind of sensation that she is all alone in the world for a split second, and her reaction (instantaneously grabbing for something to hold on to) is a protective mechanism, akin to the “fight or flight” response.

What sets it off?
The reflex is set off by excessive information applied to any of the baby’s senses. For instance, a bright light, loud noise, sudden touch, or unexpected stimulation of the balance mechanism such as dropping or tilting, activates the Moro reflex. Think of it as a newborn version of an adrenalin rush, similar to what an adolescent or adult experiences upon the anticipation of a sudden drop on a roller coaster ride.

Yes, the first 3 months. My daughter seemed to do it a lot. Her pediatrician said it was perfectly normal, and actually it's great that they have a good moro reflex. Don't worry, she will learn to trust you and this won't go on forever!! Congrats on your new edition!

My son's moro reflexes where interesting. I used to think it was because he would break out of his swaddle. So then I got him a Zipadee-zip because it gave his arms mobility, but he still was coddled. He eventually stopped having the moro reflexes about 3 months.
