I had the same "oh my gosh" moment when I stood before my empty bag when it was time to pack before my son was born. My mom broke it down for me like this. Pack for each member of your family (you, the new baby, your partner) that will be in the hospital with you.

For you:
*At LEAST 3 dif. nighties/pj sets
*A robe
*4 pairs of socks
*A very loose fitting outfit to go home in (tight clothes do NOT feel good on a body that has just given birth)
*4-6 pairs of panties
*your own sanitary pads, someone above was right, the hospital's are gross.
*all of your toiletries (travel size shampoo/cond, lotion and toothpaste work best, but be sure to include your hair brush, toothbrush, hair products that you might use to make you feel human again, and make up...you'll have a lot of visitors, and quickly get tired of hearing how "tired" you look--resist the urge to scream "No Sh*t Sherlock! I just gave birth!)
*A book to read or a crossword puzzle
*A few sugar free lollipops
*Your birth plan if you've written one

For the new baby:
*A going home outfit (weather appropriate)
*a few onsies and footie pajamas
*diapers if you choose
*a blanket or two for bundling when the baby is in your room
*a pacifier if you so choose (I don't trust the hospital's)

For Daddy:
*One or two changes of clothes
*A pair of PJ's
*cell phone charger
*A list of numbers to call once the baby is born (family, friends, insurance company, etc.)
*A book or crossword puzzle, SOMETHING to keep him occupied
*Family insurance cards

I wish you the best of luck, and congratulations in advance on your new arrival!

Some comfortable cloths to come home in for yourself. If you don't want to wear the hospital night gowns you can bring those. A pair of slippers. For the baby you want to prepare the baby bag as if the baby was here now and you were going somewhere for the day. A coming home outfit, diapers, wipes, socks, onsie, bottle if bottle feeding. Baby book if there is stuff you may want to fill out. You may want to bring some tennis balls or a rolling pin for back labor. and don't forget the Maxi pads! Good luck and congratulations!

It helps to start with the essentials... Toothbrush, toothpaste, brush/comb... deodrant. Some hospitals have shampoos and that for you to use when you're there, but it doesn't hurt to pack your own anyway.

You'll want slippers and a change of clothes... comfortable ones. A housecoat perhaps... for when/if you're walking the halls during labor.

It also doesn't hurt to have a few candies that you can suck on to take away the bad breath (yes, it happens even in labor -- though no one will tell you... and if your partner has it... believe me, you'll wish you would have packed them for him). Chapstick is a must as is an unscented lotion -- hospitals tend to be really dry, and let's face it... with the breathing excercises that you'll use during labor you'd be amazed how fast your lips will chap.

There's a long list of things... but those are just some of the basics -- things that I was more than thankful to have when I went in to have my children.

Make sure youre car seat is ready to go.

Clothes for you, your husband, and the baby. Atleast two changes. A diaper bag thats set and ready to go. Any toiletries you'd take with you when you leave over night. A fresh night gown or other sleeping stuff.

I'd take my own femenine pads with you, the ones the hospital provide are icky.

A camera and or camcorder. Some form of entertainmen for dad, book or something quiet like that.

Pretty much anything you'd take for the three of you if you were going to be gone for a few nights. Pack for three nights, you'll only be there one or two.

Lets see I have my bag packed and this is what I have...

Clothes to wear after labor...like pjs to lounge in. What ever you will be comfy in but not feel like a total frump!
Slippers...in case you need to walk around to get things moving
Brush, toothbrush/paste, hair clip, deodorant, make up, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, chap stick, pads...I don't like the stuff the hospital provides.
Baby book
Camera
Diaper bag with babys outfit
BRING IMPORTANT PAPERS
Car seat
Underwear...you bleed alot afterwards and will most likely use them
Socks
Anything youre going to use during labor...birthing ball, music
Pillows
Your partners stuff...change of clothes, snacks, pillow, blanket

Ummm...thats pretty much what I have.

You are only there like two days tops but you know how women are they want to have everything.

Loose, comfortable clothes - you'll still be really big when you leave.
Socks and slippers - hospital floors are gross.
Hair bands - you may be sweaty and sick of having your hair in your face before it's all over.
Nursing pads - even if you don't plan on nursing you'll be leaking.
Pads - you'll still be bleeding a lot when you leave.
Mints and gum - they don't let you eat or drink (only ice chips) and you'll eventually want something to help you with dry mouth and bad breath.
Toiletries - hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo.
Contact list - to call everyone that will want to know you're in labor without hassle.
Baby name list - only if you don't already have one picked out.
Camera, film/storage device, batteries/charger.
Snacks - crackers, etc., goodies for dad...you can't eat but he can, and it will cut down on him leaving for food.
book - one for you and one for dad. You'll be there for a while.
change of clothes for dad - he may not get a chance to go home for a while
charger for your cell phone - if you have one
diaper bag and all of the diaper bag accessories

You should take comfortable PJ's for while you are there
slippers
underwear
loose clothing for after
comb, makeup if you want but I doubt
hair ties
toothbrush, toothpaste
baby clothes to come home in and take pictures in
they should give you a diaper bag of the brand of formula you choose
Pads if you don't want to use the monstrous ones the hospital gives you
Good Luck

Phone numbers of the people you would like to notify, if you haven't memorized them. A radio with batteries and some music that you like. A camera. Snacks!! And secure the baby seat in the car before the baby is born. It's not something you want to do the day you are coming home. Good Luck !!

Clothes to come home from the hospital with. (both for you and baby)

Slippers.

A book you are reading.

Hair Ties.

Hair Brush.

Tooth brush

Little bottles of shampoo/toothpaste.

That's really all I can think of.

So much else will be going on (and the hospital will most likely provide a gown) that you won't be wanting to do anything.

Take comfortable clothes to come home in. Your stomach will probably still look about 5 months pregnant, so don't expect to wear your pre-baby jeans the next day. Take a nightgown or pj's that you feel both pretty and comfy in. And take your basic toiletries.
