They were usually made of white ash. The English bows were made of bone and yew wood.

Oak or any other solid wood. You can also use fallen branches that are laying around as long as they aren't wet, or they'll shrink.

By the way, if I hear about a disgruntled archer going on a bow & arrow rampage in a few days I'm not liable for anything.
