My bestfriend (who came out when she was 21) used to look really pretty with long blonde hair. When she came out, she got the short mullet cut (you know the one!) I don't understand why she cut all her hair off. Is the short mullet cut a necessary style for lesbians? Help me understand - I'm not being sarcastic.

Maybe she was fitting in when she had the long hair, or wants to fit in now, or just wants to try something different, which has nothing to do with sexuality at all.

My wife went from waist-length to completely shaved off in her late teens. People thought she was making a statement about being lesbian, but she'd been openly lesbian with long hair. It was more about creating a new chapter in her life (she'd recently been through hell) and learning to be more confident (she's a shy woman who'd hidden behind her hair.)

I've seen all kinds of hairstyles on lesbian and bi women. My own hair is mid-back-length and wavy, with bangs. I think of hair, cosmetics, and clothing as human beings' answer to mating plumage. She could be trying to attract something different in her life, at least subconsciously.

Your hair doesn't make you gay or straight. It's just you that makes you gay or straight. She wanted to try out the mullet, fine. It's not a requirment to have a hairstyle that "says" your gay or straight.

It may be peer pressure---conscious or otherwise. Every person has an innate desire to fit in. Whether we realize it or not, we do try to emulate the look of those around us.

Your friend probably didn't come out and then turn to someone and say, "Finally, I can get the cut!" (Well, maybe she did; I dunno.) It's more likely that she started openly hanging around people of similar interests and appearance and is emulating their style to fit in.

i have heard that cutting off your hair is cutting off the past, letting go of negativity that is trapped in the old dead hair. It also lightens and brightens, or so i heard

Probably because she likes that hairstyle and decided to wear her hair like that.

It is her hair!

Thats a good question. I would imagine it has to do with peer pressure and fitting in.
