Press key combination Ctrl Alt Delete
look at the task manager and see if there are any processes that are taking processor time.
when doing nothing the processor should be idle for about 97% of the time.
Have a look at the processor list. depending how much stuff is loaded in the background determines how many processors are running, 55 is typical.
finally try a speedtest, see link below

Did you ad any large programs using a lot of RAM?? You may need more RAM at least a gig is desirable.

Has your "cleaning" involved removing spyware? If not try downloading Adaware. This anti-spyware program is free to download and use and i have been using for years.
