I just had twins in January, and we didn't use fertility treatments. My doctor told me that the highest natural incident is between 38 and 42 years of age when a woman's eggs are being produced in multiples because of changing hormones. I was 41 when I got pregnant.
The other part of this, when it is natural, is the increase in technology and medical advancements. Years ago, before it was recognized that more ultrasounds should be done after age 35, many women simply lost those multiple pregnancies. Now, when it's found early, medications, bedrest, etc., are used to maintain more multiple pregnancies.
I do believe though that fertility meds play a huge role in this increase, but I wanted to add that there's another side of it as well.

It's a combination of things. You have more women waiting to have children until they are older and the closer you are to menopause the higher your chance is to have twins. Added to that is all the options that are now out there to treat infertility. You have all the fertility drugs and invetro fertilization to name two. It's more rare to have twins now and not be on drugs than it was before. 12years ago I gave birth to a set of twins and despite being only 18 I had nurse questioning me about what kind of fertility drugs I was on. I didn't need drugs I have a family history of twins and was told my chances of having another set was really high. I didn't have another set which was fine by me because it make my twins more special even though they look nothing a like.

That amazing number is including 'unnatural' methods like invitro and the like. If the study only included the natural type, then the law of averages would apply and the numbers would be about the same. But an reported wants to make an extra buck and the researcher the extra dollar for their company, to they will include ALL the numbers to make it more impressive to sell.
IF you are worried about YOU having twins. Then only if they are in YOUR family line. Your husband's doesn't count. And once you have twins, you chances of having another set goes up.

Depends on what kind of twins you are referring to. There are two types Fraternal and Identical so you'd have to be more specifc.
I do believe the rate of Fraternal Twins is up because of In Vitro Fertilization treatments as well as side effects of fertility drugs (clomid)
The rate of Fraternal Twins is also higher because women are having children at older ages. Older women have a higher risk of hyperovulating (releasing more then one egg, thus resulting in 2 eggs being fertilizes, which then, results in fraternal twins)
I had fraternal twins at 22, no fertility treatments and no history of twins in my family. I just happened to hyperovulate.
Fraternal twins can boy 2 boys, 2 girls or 1 boy and 1 girl. They are no more related then siblings born through seperate pregnancies. They may look very similiar (if the same gender) or may not look alike at all.
Identical twinning is completely spontaneous. Identical twins are not conceived through In Vitro Fertilization or fertility drugs. Family history does not increase your chances of conceiving identical twins and you chances of having another set of identical twins does not increase if you already have a set of identical twins.
Your chances of conceiving Fraternal twins increases if you've already had a set of fraternal twins.
There are other factors that can lead to conceiving Fraternal twins, some of them are Age, Race (fraternal twinning is more common in african american women) Height (taller women), weight (overweight women), Family History, Number of previous pregnancies.
A great website with some very informative facts on types of twinning, percentages and causes is www.twinstuff.com

Fertility treatments. That's another reason why I don't agree with IVF and all that--it's playing God and taking away the originality of multiples. It's such a great feeling when someone you know gets pregnant with multiples naturally and when you hear someone is pregnant with multiples and they say "Finally the treatments worked!"--it's kinda like they cheated ya know?

I think it is a combination of fertility treatments and the fact that the population is a lot larger than it used to be.

i think it's a combination of the two. i conceived my twins naturally. i also think more women are waiting to have kids until later in life. that ups the odds of having multples also.
