check they're customer support. If they have one, call them and check it out. Also, check to see where they are located at and find out if they truly exist. Check to see what guarantees, and what policies they have. And be very careful. Look around the site to see if it's legit. Also remember that popularity isn't always the cheapest.

Everything on the internet could be a scam. The only real way to evaluate if it is or not is the ratings, comments, and opinions of people who have used the site before. There are some sites like Amazon.com, half.com, and many online forms of physical store merchants that are presumably safe. Things like ebay depend on the user, not the site, since you are working directly with another person and not the site itself.
Also, verisign is a company that works to help make sure e-commerce is safe. Look for the verisgn emblem or visa, mastercard, etc. symbols to validate that the purchase will be secure.
No matter what the book is, check around and see if you can find a site to buy it from with some good reviews and good credentials, then you can feel safe buying it.

On-line shops are no more dangerous than real shops in this respect. However, make sure the shop has the little padlock icon in the lower right and make sure your PC isn't infested with spy ware and key loggers.
If your card is decent it will have a fraud department. If you do get scammed call them immediately and report unauthorized use of your card. They'll stop your card (send a new one, new number) and not charge you the money frauded from you. Some advertise "Internet fraud guarantee" but it's the same that they have always had.
If your card won't do this then they are amateurs, change card.

Make sure that it's a site you trust or a company you know. The best way it to get paypal or some similar debt card not connected to any other accounts. Some credit cards offer you to choose only a few hundred dollar spending limit so even if someone did get your numbers they would only be able to spend not that much.

Yes, and use a credit card. If anything goes wrong, you can dispute the charge with your credit card company.
