Creosote builds up over a time and will coat the inside of the flue pipe/walls.Burning coal can produce a hotter fire which tends to keep this coating down somewhat over a wood burning fire. None the less--this stove/fireplace should be cleaned out on a regular basis==depending on usage. Ever see a christmas tree go up in flames? Creosote does about the same and can be scary if it happens to you--it can even cause your house to catch on fire. There are "products" on the market purported to help/solve this creosote build-up, but a good cleaning is your best bet.

I've never tried burning both at the same time. However, Many yrs. ago, I lived in England. Then everyone burned coal in their fireplaces. We were told we should have the chimney sweep come at least once a yr. to prevent chimney fires which can catch the rest of the house on fire. When we lived in Germany, we had an oil furnace & it was the law that said the chimney sweep had to come once a year. I guess that whatever you burn will cause a buildup of some kind. The best way to keep anything from building up, have the chimney sweep come every yr. before you light your first fire of the season.

Creosote or "soot" is caused by simply burning materials, such as wood, in your fireplace. There is no way to prevent the build up of creosote. Now you are probably asking, "What is creosote?" It is basically unburned fuel that gathers in the form of black powder, flakes, or a baked-on glaze, depending on the degree of buildup. This is one of the main causes of chimney fires. When there is an excess buildup of creosote in the chimney and temperatures rise, the soot is ignited and an actual fire is started inside your chimney, showering your roof with sparks.
