Some of the experts I saw on television at the time of his desk were dicussint that question. They agreed that pulling a large barb out undoubtedly caused more tissue damage. However, they all agreed that he would not have survived much longer than he did due to the damage the initial wound caused to the heart.

Possibly. A few years back, there was a freak accident where a steel pole flew off a truck & went through the windshield of the car behind him & impaled a teenager to her seat. (This is true) Her younger brother called 9-11 & they said that the reason she survived is because no one attempted to remove it. The rescue team cut it off & took the whole thing to the hospital. Fortunately it missed all the vital organs & she's fine.

anytime you are impaled by anything, you shouldn't pull it out. But being in the heart, it probably wouldn't make a difference, but we will never know that answer. But leaving it in would have slowed the bleeding but the heart might not have been able to function anyway. Sometimes it is just your time.

I dont know. Maybe if the doctors could have broken it off small enough it could have stayed. I mean, ppl have all kinds of things inside their bodies. Our bodies are amazing... however, the blood loss would seem to have been a problem.

...I guess we will never know.

I don't think it would have made a difference, because I thought it pierced a lung or something. I don't think leaving it in there would have saved his life.

I don't think so. He might have lived slightly longer, but would've still died from blood loss.
