You don't need a college degree to make a living or to be successful.
In fact, here in Canada, so many people are sending their kids to university that there is a sincere shortage of skilled tradespeople. The other markets are oversaturated and University grads are working at grocery stores and in malls and stuff.
A University degree doesn'ty buy you a work ethic or common sense either.

No one thinks you HAVE to have a degree... only that it helps you in getting jobs and earning money. It is a proven statistic that college grads make about a million dollars more over their lifetime than a high school grad.
As for why the govt should pay for it, I have no idea. It is not the govts job to provide you with higher education, you should WANT to earn said education. There are plenty of ways to earn that education.
Unfortunately, people in our society have gotten so lax about earning anything and end up depending on the govt for everything.

It's never the government paying for it. It is taxes paid by other people.
You don't need a college degree. College is just big business.
