The fact that a short story has a main stroyline and doesn't extend onto several subplots.

People who don't like to spend weeks reading a book can happily read a short story to pass some time or enlighten their imagination without have to get in too deep. A bit like watching a few hours ot television or a film as opposed to watching a tv series every night for several weeks/months.

A short story should include a good intro/setting, followed by a thrilling main plot which is rounded up nicely without any loose ends, give the reader closure.

To write one just think of the basic Beginning, Middle and End concept and then bridge the gaps.

It has a light but interesting plot, colorful characters and brief enough to be read in one sitting!

A short story weather good, or not so good is similar to a longer story except you are going to need to take out a lot of detail and unnecessary dialog.

You shouldn't attempt to write a short story using subjects that would require more detail..

Start with a good outline. A snappy intro and unexpected ending makes it good.

The characters, especially the main character should be interesting and readers should care what happens to them.
