solid sodium metal is what's called an active metal
basically speaking, that means in water or acid it'll replace the hydrogen, violently

for example, high molarity of hydrochloric acid and solid sodium
2HCl+2Na-->2NaCl+H2

Hydrogen gas is fairly flammable...but the reaction itself is violent to release the hydrogen..fizzy and popping/exploding

http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/CCA/samples/cca4Na_acid.html
shows these reactions

Don't really know, but water and sodium react violently and will explode. I would think since acids are composed of water, that an explosion may also occur when mixed.
