It really depends on what type of bike you want. If you are wanting a "Harley style" bike, then go with a sportster or Honda shadow. If you want a sport bike, I would suggest a couple year old Suzuki gsxr 600. You really don't want to buy a brand new bike as your first. Give yourself time to acclimate yourself to it.

Check your local cycle trader and buy a used bike to learn on. As a new rider you should choose something 600 ccs or less. My advice it to spend a little money and buy a used 250 street bike to learn on and practice.
don't worry about what you look like for a few months while you get more comfortable with riding, this practice can save your life. Also if you dump the bike, who cares right? As long as you are not injured, that is what this first bike is for, To learn.
Do not go out and buy a new GSXR 600 or any of the supersport bikes (like we all wanted to) . That time will come.

the last of the SACS 650 bandits 2005 model will be in your price range, enough grunt for a day out at the track and with a subtle side too. but consider maintainance costs Bandits (all of them) up to the water cooled model have to be serviced every 3,500 miles and there is a big service at 7,000 mile intervals and multiples there of. a simple low maintainance and ecconomical bike is the yamaha diversion 600 and 900. simple 8 valve 4 cyl multiple. not a high horsepower bike and due to the later fazer a bit of an unloved aunty.. so expect good private bargains and a lot of bike for your money later models were sold with a complete set of luggage as a loss leader sales gimmick. So expect to pay £1,900 for a late model faired 900 with full givi luggage even from a dealer.. about what you'd pay for a naked 600 bandit with no frills or extras privately.. as a beginer stay away from the varadero 1000, it is big heavy bulky and very expensive to repair if you drop it... expect to pay nearly a grand for a straight replacement tank. and if the bike goes over it is gonna get damaged at the least and holed at the worse..

I used to ride but dumb car "cage" drivers scared me out. If I were to start over as a new rider, I'd look for a school that teaches people how to safely ride motor bikes and motorcycles. Perhaps some bike shops can help you. Then the instructors can help you find the motor that is right for you.

What did you pass your test on? Maybe that is what you should stick with.As everyone on YA knows by now I always recommend a Harley Davidson.Try an 883 Hugger,it's a great starter bike.

get a buell blast. Made by harley, so you are getting american power, affordable, and at 500cc it is an excellent first bike. It actually set the land speed record 2 years ago for the fastest 500cc bike.

a 400cc or a 600cc normal roadster bike. not a super sports, chin-to-the-tank racer and not a laid back, heavy custom machine. Choose whatever is a concession near to where you live, Honda might be a good choice.

360-600cc cruiser that you can sit on with your feet flat on the ground and your arms loose (spaghetti arms).
Find one that fits the style of riding you plan to do.
I like the Kawasaki 500cc Vulcan, or 600cc Honda Shadow. They both sit low, handle well, make decent power and look good.

get a older bike that is around 600cc or smaller. cause no matter how "good" you think you are you will lay it down a few times. drive it for a few years then go and get a newer one. hope this helps
