I think people have been braiding their hair as long as they have had hair. The Myceneans, Minoans, Greeks and Romans all had eleborate braiding done to their hair. In many parts of the world, braiding of the hair is still done for beautification purposes. The Masaai men in Kenya dye their hair red with ochre and braid it as a sign of masculinity while the women shave their heads.
