i think it is possible for the healthy eating to last. however it is up to parents to educate their children from a very young age in healthy eating. parents need to stand up and take responsbilility for the health of their children. increasingly more children are obese and if taught by their parents and given healthier meals at home, children will chose the healthier option not necessarily always but certainly more often, remember parents are the primary educators in their children lives and children learn by example!!!

Back when I was in Elem. school, you picked up your milk & they handed you a plate already fixed. It had meat, potatos/maccaroni/rice, a green veg. & a slice of bread. There was also a dessert. Either jello, canned fruit or cobbler.
Bread of some kind. If you didn't want hot lunch then you bring lunch from home. Kids ate their lunch also. In Jr. high & high school we had a little bit of choice, only in which veg. we wanted. Back then, parents taught their kids to eat at least some of everything put in front of them. After school, Mom may have given you a piece of fruit to last untill suppertime. Kids knew better than to throw out good food. I truly think that if parents would teach their children how to eat all kinds of food, then they would be so much more healthy(& not obese either). As for whether or not school lunches stay healthy is totally up to parents. If they talk with their children every day about what they ate then they can complain if the choices become junky. Don't worry that school people will think you're a pain, they won't. The school board is who you would need to complain to over & over if that is what it takes. Get other parents to do the same. Just remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I don't know about where you live but here children are given a choice between what passes for food and a salad bar. The food isn't like days of old. The children were givens lists of food and chose THEIR favorites. Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, tater tots. Get the idea ? The government actually had lunchroom managers look at the trash to see what was thrown away. All healthy foods ! They figured to get the kids to eat they'd just give them what they want. To heck with nutrition !

The fish for the protein and the beans for the protein. Brains can only develop with adequate ammounts of protein and since most children don't get enough milk, meat or other sources of protein but seem to get a fair ammount of Juice for the vitamin C, I think the fish is the more important of the two. If parents paid more attention to the nutrition of their children yes it would last. I pack my childrens lunch every day.

Uh, I don't know where you're from but kids in schools do NOT get healthy foods at school. THey get pizza, chicken nuggets, tacos, hot dogs, etc,
They do not get the kinds of things I use to get. There menus shock me.

I think it should be all about choice. Personally I never could have eaten the crap the Jamie Oliver forces on innocent schoolchildren, but as long as there's a normal option as well...

It's about time that schools started to feed our children decent food instead of the rubbish that they used to feed them.
