My friend and I are going skiing this winter. We'll be on the bunny slopes for about a day, and that's it. I doubt I'll ski often, if again, so I don't want to buy a quality ski outfit.

What work well in place of actual ski pants?

If it's not too cold, people ski in jeans or sweats, but I recommend some sort of snow pants...like what you might use to go sledding.

The problem with anything but snow pants is that water will soak to your skin very very quickly, and you will be cold and miserable. So, you spend $40 on a lift ticket, $30 on a lesson, $20 on rentals, travel costs, food costs, blah blah blah, and you spend the day in the lodge because you are frozen!

The very most important thing is gloves. When I was a ski instructor I refused to teach anybody without gloves or mitts. Snow is made of ice crystals, which are sharp. One fall without gloves may result in some blood to contend with!

Don't forget the lessons! Skiing isn't like basketball or something, where you can learn to play a little at least without instruction. You absolutely need a ski instructor to get you on your feet, and I promise you, the rest of your day will be a dream!
