"No one wants to die alone", and that's what people are afraid of. Deteriorating and living in a shady nursing home, getting twice a year visits from distant relatives, being driven insane by constant television. Happens all the time.
It's not just that fear, but people derive their self worth from their ability to acquire a partner/mate. If you don't have one, you might think something is wrong with you, or that your mojo isn't very strong.
A friend of mine got told by this one guy she was dating that 'he was the best she could do, and that's what she's going to learn', which I find to be the disproof of the whole concept.
Any time you think that way, you are settling for less than you wanted. I think it's better to die with great unsatisfied dreams than live mediocre satisfied dreams in defeat.
That is, of course, a personal decision we all must make. I do respect people who choose the latter, we all have to get through the day somehow.

Both men and women do it, they start to panic thinking that time is running out etc etc and they pick the wrong person.
If things don't work out for me with my man, I won't be running into the arms of another guy just to have a family...I will just go to a sperm bank and then worry about finding a man later on.

Of course they do. I think that the percentage of people that do that is very high. I think that people begin to put aside what their "type" is when they feel that they are getting too old or tired of being alone and opt for what they can work with or accept in hopes that it will the Lord will make it work out just fine.
Great question.
