Jack Grunsky is a wonderful writer and performer of songs for children. You might try Raffi as well. Try searching for their cds on Amazon. Along with songs written specifically for children, try some ethnic instrumental music such as African drum beats or German band music or even some light classical music such as "Peter and the Wolf". Expose children to all genres of music. You might try some of Cat Stevens' music such as "Moonshadow" or Phil Collins' "Trashing the Camp". Look for the soundtracks to some of the Disney or other children's films for some good music written for children. Oh, and try Sharon, Lois and Bram's music; always a hit with kids.
