She came from a small German princely family and grew up in a very sheltered way. He was a relatively weak young man who had absolutely no real preparation for assuming the throne. They were very attached to one another and saw themselves as this safe little nucleus family within a hostile world. They because so inwardly focused that they lost touch with reality and that ultimately lead to their downfall.
