Depends. Has the bird ALWAYS been caged? If so, that's the only life it's ever known and it's content in it's surroundings. It's the Plato "cave" philosophy.
Otherwise, Ask Maya Angelou, SHE knows why the caged bird sings.

A bird raised as a pet knows no other life. It does not know nor does it have the ability to conceive of the freedoms outside its cage. So the bird would be content in it's little world. So it sings.

The cage bird sings in order to free it's elf mentally, if not physically from it's surroundings.
