George Elliot was the pen name of Mary Anne Evans. She wanted to be taken seriously as an author as women almost never were in the 1800's, and she couldn't really afford to draw too much attention more to herself as she was openly having an affair with a married man.

She had a pretty good basis for believing these things - she was essentially running 'The Westminster Review' (under the name Marian Evans), and many already considered it indecent not only that she had such a high role, but that she had the gall as an unmarried woman to mix with 'decent society'. There were those who even went to far as to criticize her appearance when they had nothing better to mock... so basically she was already accustomed to recieving the worst kind of attention and didn't exactly want any more of it.

Born Mary Ann Evans in 1819, George Eliot was a woman ahead of her time: a proud and determined individual who continually broke the sexual, religious and social rules of Victorian society. She was one of the greatest minds of her age, yet she demeaned herself for love. Scandals and rumours plagued her life, but never defeated her will or her literary genius. Against all odds, she wrote some of the world’s greatest masterpieces including Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss, and Silas Marner.
