Fiber is a type of complex sugar that's a polysaccharides, it's called cellulose. The reason it's good for digestion is because our human body doesn't have the enzyme that digests this molecule (the enzyme is called cellulose). So, for that reason, when you eat a lot of fiber, it would stay complete (instead of digested) until excretion of the feces. So when your intestines are trying to push out the food (called chyme at this level) it doesn't go back because it's solid, but with lack of fiber, the chyme is liquid'ish and the excretion is a little harder.
Where can you find fiber? In all vegetables because cellulose is a main constituent of a cell wall in plants. Now, some have higher fiber than others. Some of the best foods you can eat with high fiber are: black eyed beans, lettuce, spinach, collards, onions, asparagus, chick peas, lentils, carrots, avocados, apples, pears, grapes (and raisins), prunes, etc.
Don't worry dear, it wasn't a dumb question :)
Hope this helps.
PS: when they say a bread is whole grain does NOT mean it has a lot of fiber, it's a marketing scheme to try to sell it, plus it's ok from the FDA to do that. Unfortunately about 90% of breads in the market that say they're whole grain breads have less then 2% of fiber per 100 calories (very little) so when you eat whole grain bread don't expect to necessarily have your daily dose of fiber (which is about 25 g a day recommended)

First of all, I don't think anyone else mentioned that you want to increase the fiber in your diet *gradually,* over the course of several weeks, or you will have serious distress (bloating, gas, discomfort, etc). Also, drink lots and lots of water if you have a high-fiber diet, because your body will need it to handle the fiber.

Eat lots of whole fruits and vegetables, like oranges and apples (with skin) and bannanas. These are the best sources of fiber, and very good for the baby, too! Broccoli, beans (baked beans, chick peas, black beans). Popcorn is good, too.

Eventually, your goal should be to work up to 30 grams of fiber per day.

Look for 100 percent whole grain products, which are easier now to find than ever. Whole grain bread, brown rice, 100 whole grain croutons, whole grain tortillas, 100 percent whole grain pasta, Bran-Flakes Cereal, Raisin Brain. Theres tons of it for sale now at the grocery stores.

It can take some getting used to, but the whole grain products are often tastier!

Cheese can be binding when you are constipated.

You can buy fiber pills. Things with fiber are usually leafy green veggies. Whole wheat pasta is better than regular. Kashi cereal has a good bit of fiber.

Fruits and vegetables are your best sources of fiber. I try to maintain a high fiber diet, and I eat a lot of salads and fresh fruits. I also take FiberCon tablets sometimes.

You can usually look on the back of packages and it'll tell you how much fiber is in something. Broccoli has alot of fiber and so do most bread products.
