I don't think its the age I think it is the maturity of the child and ofcourse how often he is away from the home without a parent.
If he is mature enough to keep up with it and use it appropriately things should be ok. Plus if he is out of the home more than in the home the idea of the cell phone is great because he can contact you when needed and you can find him when you need to.

Well, I got mine's when I was 11 in 7th grade. But I think the appropriate age is when They start middle school. I used mines for when I had to call my mom to stay after school or to go over a friend's house. They wouldn't let me use the phone at school and if they did I had to wait ! But with a cellphone I wouldn't have to wait and when I get my answer I'll be sure not to miss my bus and have to walk all the home :D

I think it depends on the maturity of the child (would the child abuse the privilege, be prone to losing it, etc.) A cellphone is a security/safety device for parents now. They can easily keep us informed as to where they are or contact us if an emergency should arise so if they have the maturity to handle the responsibility of having a cellphone then any age is appropriate.

13 or 14. when they start getting more independent and more responsible. But i would give them the cell phone with a limit... maybe a pre-paid or unlimited plan.. that way you are not stuck with a $400 phone bill at the end of the month.

When ever they start running around with out you. There are these phones called firefly's there meant for kids there is restrictions on them they can only call numbers that are programed in the phone there is a limit of 20 numbers or something like that and they can text but once they start to reach there limit a alert text will be sent to your phone letting you know.

I really think it depends on situation. My stepson is 8, but when he visits his father and me he has to take an Amtrak to LA from San Diego, so we are getting him one. I know that most kids lose them and are irresponsible with them, but you just have to ask yourself: is that worth being able to talk to him/her whenever you want and also giving them the ability to call for help whenever??? I think it is. His mom feels the same and we should have done this way sooner. So does your child need one? Maybe not REALLY, but it is 2006 and we have the tech to reach our children at the drop of a hat, so why not do it? I do hear all the parents with their concerns, so I think it's a hit or miss kind of thing. If you teach your kid responsibility, then chances are they won't screw it up. You treat it as a priviledge on one hand, but really it's for us, you know?

It depends on the kid. If he really doesn't need it, then I wouldn't get him one. But maybe one kid might need one at the age of thirteen. So it would be ok for him.
For others, you may have to wait until they're old enough to accept responsibility for the bills, too!
