Based on the facts you give, stay where you are.
Reasons: Two children will be leaving home within two years, so you've got a 2400 square foot house for two or three people (you didn't say if you were married or not) -- either way its plenty big.
Moving to another school district for the athletics isn't such a good idea. Are there other alternatives? Rec leagues?
The things you desire in your house can easily be achieved with a renovation. . . presumably at much lower cost than in moving.
You've given no real reason why you should move

I went from a top-notch school district with poor athletics to a so-so school district with top-notch athletics. I went from an 1800 sq ft house to a 3400 sq ft house. I hate having a bigger house. There is so much more to clean (4 toilets!!!) it stresses me out. I can't clean it all in one day. My kids are 13 and 16 yours are probably like mine - spread out all over the house. I'm pretty disgruntled with the school district too having come from a really good one - I'm always comparing them and it seems like the athletics don't really matter that much anymore.
Do you have your house the way you want it now? If you buy another one you will probably be wanting to change some things and that can be expensive.
One other thing, good neighbors are a real bonus. I think I'm leaning toward staying. Your 17 and 16 year olds will be out going to college fairly soon and you will have more space (until they come home to roost for the summers).

You've got a 1,000 more sf than my house. You're kids will be off to college soon, so if you want you can remodel and put in the larger bath and walkin closet. Neighbors can be a pain, if you're happy with yours, stay where you are. Also if you do move you'd probably have a higher mortgage to payoff.

take a look at what you have and what you will lose, and vice versa, if it is in our budget and feel more comfortable moving off you go, but if you can put one of your kids in a diffrent school with a better athletic dept. dont move. Your neighbors will be there for you and new ones might not, look at the big picture and do your pro's and con's

Property values are declining, and 2400 sq. ft is more than enough for 3 kids and 2 adults. It's better to save money :)
