Sure,

It's a racket like any other and it's been around since 1980's.
In the old days the pirates use to set up BBS's that distributed Warez, sometimes they'd have 9-10 phone numbers that people could call in at 9600 baud to download stuff when the Internet came along things changed the pirates use hack windows pc's to distrubute their stuff and it's difficult to track them when the cops shut down one sight theyswitch to another zombie pc and their back in buisness in no time.

They might know that society says that, but anyone who pirates is a sociopath with no conscience and no respect for anyone else, much the same as the same core offenders in jail who always seem to break as many laws as possible.

Yes I think most know it's illegal, but somehow in their minds they've justified it...Microsoft is an evil organization and charges too much and already has too much money, etc.
