It is a function of the parallax effect or parallax error.
As you walk forward say along a road lined with trees, the trees seem to move backwards relative to you. But the moon being far away moves backwards relative to you much more slowly. Therefore the moon seems to accompany you as you walk along. In reality the trees appear to be moving backwards between you and the moon.

Most things move when you walk. Trees move past you, houses move past you, and other people move past you. All of them move at varying speeds, depending on how far they are away from you. Your brain is used to calculating the relative speeds of things moving around you.
The moon, however, is far enough away that it doesn't move any appreciable distance when you walk. This tricks your brain into thinking that the moon is "coming along" with you, as normally the only things that don't move respective to you when you are moving are other objects moving the same speed as you.

Not me, it stays in the same place. Are you possessed? Maybe like that horror film Final Destination. Maybe with Halloween coming up you need to hide.
