I have an instructor that is brutal! I understand that she wants us to know more than the definition, but sometimes the questions on the exams are beyond my ability to cross reference with the concept. Am I alone?

Just make sure that you study outside of the classroom. Do your readings multiple times, ALWAYS ask questions, try to get extra help, do all the questions, and create a study group. Review your notes and rewrite them every weekend so you can review them. Highlight important sections in the textbook so when you read over it before a test, you'll know which terms were important. Participate in class. Study groups are useful because someone's bound to have the correct notes and most ppl are willing to help.

Be sure to note that what you've been doing in high school is definitely not going to work for university or college. I learned that the hard way.

I know I have struggled with biology in the past. The best places to get help are at the college's tutoring center which is free. Another approach is talking to your instructor during her office hours. In addition, I found a frequently asked section on college biology courses. I have also included some online help sites below.
