The director/writer, Sofia Coppola, has said several times in interviews she left that intentionally ambigous. She wanted the audience to make up their own minds what he said to her.

No one will say. I have the dvd and tried putting on the subtitles during that part, and it just says something to the effect of "mumbles inaudibly". One of life's great mysteries.
