we are putting laminate flooring in our basement and we are installing kitchen cabinentsover the top of them. I am wondering if this is ok or do we need to wait until the cabinents are in and then install the floor due to the weight of the cabinents not allowing it to still function as a floating floor.

No... You have answered your own question with the question. The laminate floor must have expansion gap around the perimeter of the room, and the cabinets will bind the floor from moving, and will eventually buckle the floor. So... put the cabinets in and then the floor. It is not very time consuming to cut around the cabinets..

hi mark, i live in india and we recently put laminate flooring for our home. the experts advised us NOT to put it in the kitchen area as the flooring wud get spoilt if their was any massive leakage of water etc. may i make 2 suggestions....dont install it under the cabinets so that incase u have any leakage the floor wont get damaged and secondly water proof ur basement before installing the flooring.
the flooring is lovely and very easy to maintain and the good thing is the laminate flooring is scratch resistant....i think if u keep the 2 suggestions in mind go ahead and put the flooring and make ur basement cosy....

I agree. Its better to place the cabinets first, and the fit the flooring to the cabinets. Remember, you can adjust the size of the flooring, not the cabinets.

Also, you'll want a sealant where the floor and cabinets meet. This way, any spills will not leak down beneath the cabinets and cause problems. Contact your flooring manufacturer for the best sealant to use.

if you do... seal the inside of the cabinet with clear siliconized caulk on floor of cabinet & a few inches up.... if your sink leaks, or stops leak, th water will pool up in front of sink base toekick, if, you have also caulked the cabinet to the floor. otherwise the water will find its way around the corner of the pergo "type" product & get under floor! on top, you have enough time to wipe it up!

i would have to recommend fitting the flooring after all cabinets or other permanent fixtures both for expansion purposes and the fact the floor may need replacing before your cabinets
