Fish (even salt waster fish) DO drink water because they are thirsty. While they are surrounded by water and cannot be deprived of it unless (as suggested) they are removed from the water, I suppose there could be some sort of affliction that stops them from being able to metabolize the water.

Also, when a fish is taken out of the water he does not die of thirst, but instead he suffocates. Specifically, the filter membranes in his gills collapse because they are too heavy to support their own weight without the water to hold them out.

To maintain fluid balance, freshwater fish pee out 1/3 of their body weight per day. They don't drink water, but instead squeeze extra water out of the food before swallowing. Diffusion and osmosis happen at the gills and also affect fluid balance. Typically when they're stressed or sick they tend to take on too much water. Salinity of their blood is around .9%. When the salt level is increased above the level in their blood, yes, they would get dehydrated because water would try and flow out of the fish to the higher salt concentration in the water.

The answer is that fish do drink water -- all animals (including ourselves) need water to survive. They also extract oxygen from water in order to breathe. But what about fish that swim in the ocean? Do they drink salt water? Yes, but saltwater fish excrete a lot of salt with the help of their gills. That's why most fish taste surprisingly unsalty -- that is, except for sharks.

Now I guess a fish could get sick like a human and get dehydrated.
