I have a shaded area on the north side of my house and I'm not sure what kind of plants to get. I don't really trust my "gardner" to put plants I like there, so I want to pick them out myself. I'm kind of clueless in this area.

A nursery won't come out to your house to look at an area just because it isn't worth it to them for the time investment. Most often your best bet is to take pictures of the area, note the conditions (sun / shade, soil, water etc.) and take measurements. Once you do this go to a local nursery and they can help you select plants that will grow well in the area and look good.

If a nursery does send someone out it typically costs $100 - 150. Bringing in pictures is free.

Your local nursery has people who can make recommendations. You meet the nicest people at the garden center!

If you want to hire someone to come out, call and get rates for several landscape architects who can make suggestions to perk up your whole landscape area.
