That is not generally what most Americans think. Your friends may be running into particularly uneducated Americans. I have never heard anyone refer to any camels in Brazil, and other than hearing references made to Brazilian rain forests, I've never heard anyone talk about people living in forests in Brazil.

Whoever it is your friends have run into aren't just "regular uneducated people". They're amazingly ignorant and, as far as I know, relatively rare. In fact, is there any chance your friends are exaggerating about what some Americans have said or else misunderstood what Americans said as a result of, maybe, a language barrier?

You know what I think many Americans associate with Brazil? Cosmetic surgery and women who have had it and show off great bodies in bikinis!! Again, though, even if this is what many Americans may associate with Brazil I'm fairly certain people generally have a bigger and more accurate picture of it than just that.

Lack of education. Some people just don't get that the modern world includes all countries. It is a sterotype. It happens all the time to many cultures. Like in Russia in movies it is always snowing, like they never have summer. I could go on and on. Small minded people just can't grasp the concept of the modern world being global.

Camels? Never heard that one. *lol*

I'm sorry, but I hear any word related to South America and I can't think of anything but rainforests and ridiculously poor people.

Because Americans know nothing at all about other countries but their own.
And they"know"everything about countries where they played their games of war power.
I asked some if they know what Holland is.
The craziest answers I got.
No they do not know much about other cultures then their own.

because many of them are ignorant they think that they are the only ones that are civilized they think that people from distant contries are savages that dont know what technology is. just because people live in a contry full of forests does mean they live in them or that are no cities. people today are ignorants yhry just dont know anything of anything.
