Left my lights on yesterday and my battery died.
Jumped it last night, and it started for a couple minutes, but was making a strange noice untill I put it in drive.
After putting it back in neutral, it stalled and wouldn't start.
Upon rejumping, I noticed my friend had put her side of the cables on backgrounds. There were some sparks and the cables were getting really hot.
Afterwards, the car wouldn't even try to turn over [its a Nissan Maxima if that matters]. I charged the battery at Advanced Auto Parts today, but it still won't even try to turn over. The lights, radio, etc are all seeming fully powered but for some reason no starting action.
I live an hour away from work where my car has been stranded for two days. Will anyone help me figure out how to start my car so I can get home?

One of the nightmare of jump starting is connecting the cables wrong.
MOST Nissan vehicles will blow the ECM fuse(s) or the main MAXI fuse if connected backwards to protect the delicate circuitry in the PCM.
Check ALL if the fuses, both those under the dashboard AND those under the hood. Nissan also uses FUSIBLE LINKS> These are fuses in the strictest sense, but are in appearance a length of wire about 2" to 4" long with connectors on either end. If this device fails, the wire will look like it got really hot and have a burned appearance. Use your finger to lift and "stretch" the wire. Wire will not stretch, so if you can stretch it, it is damaged, and will need replacement.
Good Luck

Putting jumper cables on reversed will cause all kinds of electrical problems. First I'd check the wires going to the starter and see if any are burned or loose. If the car has a starter relay, it's probably burned up. Try jumping across the terminals of the starter and see what happens. If it won't turn over doing that, the starter solenoid is probably trashed.
Without being there I don't know what else to suggest. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear what happened to your car. Very likely that the wrong polarity burned out a main fuse. Could be the engine main, or the starter connection got fried. If you're lucky, the ECU and other sensitive components survived.
You're gonna have to get the car towed, for a competent electrician to diagnose. Sorry.

Besides the starter the only thing I can think of is what is called a fuseable link. Its a wire with a fuse in it that is designed to blow incase of electrical malfunction. You may be able to go back to advance auto and have them show you a picture of it. You will want to consult a repair manual to find it's exact location.

A diagnostic scan won't help at all since you removed the battery the codes were lost.
Second it's not your starter motor either.
Unfortunately since the cables were put on reversed, you fried your computer(ECM).
the only fix is a new ECM. sorry.

I like ironhand's answer....I would go along with his...one additional thought here...on the fuse links he mentioned.,...there should be one down by the starter....this is where I'd look first.
Good luck

you may have damaged the starter motor. If it is a standard trans, push start it. Other wise you may be out of luck.

You've either ruined your battery, your alternator, or both.
