Best one I can think of is INTENSITY by Dean Koontz. It involves a deranged serial killer who kills a family, one person lives (unknown to him). She follows him because she hears him saying that he has a little girl that he is holding captive. She follows him to try to save the girl. INTENSE!!!

Second best is A SIMPLE PLAN. Don't remember the author. More sick than scary. Two brothers find Millions of dollars of drug money in a crashed plane. The plot involves their downward spiral into greed, murder, etc.

The Ghost Stories of M R James - yes they're victorian, yes, he rarely describes the horrors in great detail but I ended up afraid to go to bed and I was 30 at the time. The stories are mostly about people who blunder into situations and end up terrorised by things barely seen but definitely felt. You can find some of his stuff at Project Guttenberg and I defy anyone to read "Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You My Lad" and look at an empty bed in the same way.

The Trickster by Muriel Gray

The Shining by Stephen King (his best in my opinion)

I also highly recommend the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. It's kind of a more modern Edgar Allen Poe feel. Very creepy!

I'd have to say Salem's Lot by Stephen King or The Exorcist by W.P. Blatty. Stephen King's early works are masterpieces, and some of his short stories are also awesome.

With no one in the house, no lights but the one you're using to read and very dark and creepy outside. Try reading 'Salem's Lot' by Stephen King.

There are two that immediately come to mind -- both Stephen King -- "Christine" and "Salem's Lot". Couldn't sleep after reading Salem's Lot, and Christine will make you not want to drive on a deserted road late at night.

either read "da vinci code' or "lovely bones" both books are great and i could not put them down. they held my attention for about 5 hours straight. which is a really good thing considering i have a.d.d and nothing can hold my attention for more than 5 mins.
