It's actually quite athletic. You perform tumbling and other gymnastics moves, and it's great exercise. I think that some of the girls fall into the category your father prescribes to, but for the most part, it's a sport for girls in school - like basketball or softball.

Cheerleading is not for stuck up superficial girls, I was a cheerleader and was never once called "Stuck-up" Tell your parents that cheerleading brings people together to have fun and learn school spirit and how to work together as a group. Cheerleaders work hard at what they do and have fun. I miss being a cheerleader if I could do it again I would. People may label cheerleaders as stuck up girls because yeah some people can get way over their head and think they are better than everyone. I wan't like that and I frown upon those who are. If you want to be a cheerleader then you go be a cheerleader. Don't let your parents stop you from doing something that you would like to do and that you would enjoy. Goodluck sweetie!

What are the particular reasons that your mother doesn't want you to cheer?

There are actually two types of cheerleading. There is scholastic cheerleading, which is where you stand on the sidelines and do organized cheers for a team. Then there is competitive cheerleading, where you are with a team of people who perform a 2.5 minute routine to be judged.

Check out www.usasf.net. This will show your parents that cheerleading is a great thing to do. Go to youtube.com and search "allstar cheer." Point out Top Gun, Miami Elite, Cheer Athletics. These are groups of girls and guys who work really hard.

Sounds like they may have had bad experiences with cheerleaders. Maybe getting a girl from the squad over your house to prove that they are NOT all stuck up and can be nice people. Have them check out a cheer comp. too to see how much hard work goes into it! Good Luck!

somewhere thru the years cheerleading has lost its real purpose....
the dallas cowboy cheerleaders and etc have brought it to a new all time slump - nothing but a bunch of jiggling and flipping to entertain the men
cheerleaders were meant to instill and encourage school spirit and comrodary.....to be of good representation of the school they were from - regardless of where they were

Just do it anyway...then show them what you do everyday and it might change their mind....i have been hurt from cheer so many times...i got a concussion from a girl falling from a stunt and kicking me in the head, i broke my nose from a girl falling on it, i pulled a muscle in my back doing a back-handspring, and those are only the major ones!!!
