I was loading the clothes into the dryer and noticed a strong smell. I found a shirt that reeks of lighter fluid and yet it did not go into the wash smelling that way. I washed it a second time and the smell is just as bad as the first time. There is no evidence of a cigarette lighter or odd items in the wash tub. What's up? Is my washing machine leaking oil or something like that?

The detergent was liquid Tide. I just find it odd that only that shirt smells out of the whole load. It has been washed in warm water twice. It is soaking now. The shirt has been washed before with no problems.

Has "something" been spilled in your box of detergent, or has something been added to your liquid detergent bottle? Check it . Got some small kids ? You know the smell -- so do you have and use any lighter fluid around your house? Change out your detergent to a fresh one and wash it again. Don"t overlook the bleach or softner either.

Is it just one shirt? I had the same problem with a sweathshirt. It was becasue of the material it was made out of. It was some recycled plastic nylon fibers. When it heated in the dryer, it had a chemical smell that I just couldn't get rid of.
