it sounds normal, but try aquaphor, eucerin, SHEA BUTTER, olive oil,COCONUT OIL....i wrote the natural ones in all caps.....try using them first before any lotions....the baby really doesn't need that much of a bath try using cetaphil on him.....just rub him down and use a cotton cloth to wipe it off of him....I hope this helps......

It's totally normal for a newborns skin to get all "dry & peely". It's part of their adjustment to the harsh dry world outside the womb.
I would be careful about how much and what types of lotions you're using though....steer clear of heavily fragranced lotions, they could irritate your baby's delicate skin.
Bathing can actually help the dry skin to peel away faster. Apply a light moisturizer, like Aveeno unscented, right after bathtime and the problem will resolve itself shortly.
**edited to add: DON"T USE HYDROCORTISONE!! Unfortunately a pp has mentioned using this. Hydrocortisone is supposed to be used to treat chronic dermititis and/or exzema. Your newborns skin is totally not ready for such a harsh abrasive cream like that.
Congrats on your new babe!

Put a capful of baby oil in the bath water (after you wash the hair) and see how that works. Both our children had extremely dry skin - particularly our daughter who was born in January. The baby oil in the bath helped a lot.
And not to be too personal, but the lipid content of nursing milk helps I'm told, as opposed to formula. That's not to judge in any way a decision to nurse or not, only an observation that it appears to have helped our children.

Is it just dry skin, or is it starting to look sore and red?
My doctor started by giving us E45 cream, then we were given aqueous cream, then Balneum Plus bath oil, these three together work, but also we have to put some hydrocortisone cream on her skin when it gets worse...she has been diagnosed with infantile eczema.
Cut down to bathing your baby every three or four days, just make sure you 'top and tail' her every day (cleaning her face and bottom with cotton wool and water).
These things should help. Go see your doctor and see what is recommended for you.

i had the same problem with my daughter a very nice old lady gave me this recipe maybe it will work for your child it wont hurt . get some olive oil place it in a glass jar and place in a pot of boiling water let it boil for about 15 to 20 minutes. take it off the flame and let the oil cool down to room temp. wash your child and don't dry him/ her off completely and rub the olive oil all over the body u should see a difference right away . it might not smell as great as the Johnson's but it does the job much better

My son had very dry skin as a newborn. Try putting a drop or two of baby oil in his bath water. This worked well for me. I also used Aveeno baby lotion...I found it the least irritating on my son's sensitive skin.

Aveeno is a great lotion to use for dry skin. Make sure that you are using a mild baby soap at bathtime as well...adda bit of baby oil to the water.

Hi, my child had this problem when she was a baby. First, I must suggest you see your doctor because there may be many reasons why your baby has dry skin. You also need to be aware of potential allergy reactions. As for me I used olive oil right out of the bottle, applied it to damp skin.
All the best!!

Wow! Since you tried the baby lotion route, I'd go straight to the doctor. I wouldn't wait. Though a baby is too young to have that disease that causes organs and skin to harden (a friend of mine in her 30s had it), I'd rather have my baby checked out by a doctor. Best wishes and prayers to you all.
