I avoid such things, whenever possible. I've only been tripped up once, when I didn't know what was being planned, and they locked all the doors so that I couldn't get out of it.
If a time were to come again where I'm being honored for something I had done, it would fully depend on the circumstances and whether I could use it to help those I've been trying to help for so many years. An example, I may turn down a Medal of Honor from the President, because our government consistently refuses to enforce court ordered visitation on the same level as court ordered child support. The funding for the one national study, 1989's Survey of Absentee Parents, was cut off after only five states were completed, because the study was not finding the proof that fathers don't care about their children, don't really want visitation or custody rights, and that they claim it only because they don't want to support their children.

I would start the "whistle blowers" as a new political party...where the truth tellers get rewarded rather than demoted and folly, corruption, greed, and criminal neglect are exposed and made to face the music.
