The first answerer is right--it wouldn't be petty if you were a Jew. What you were doing was helping to create a hostile workplace for them. I'm an HR secretary; I have to help investigate claims like that. Some are bogus (I don't think it's harassment to have a nature calendar with Bible verses on your cubicle wall), but some are not. You needed to be reminded that your office is for everyone and words like that are an unwelcome mat to some people, regardless of your intent. Sorry.

in this day & time not politically correct. Just be careful you know people are so sensitive, first offense shouldn't be no big deal, anymore it could be considered discrimination then follows termination. Good luck

my brother told me how he was at a lawyers office and when the lawyer told him the price of his serveces. he said well if you dont mind let me jew you down a little . he said I happen to be jewish.. dont let me *** r you down.. i just thought that it was funny.
