There is not another name for a woolen blanket or shawl. Both are two different things.

A shawl is wrapped around a person's shoulders. It is not very large and is big enough to go around someone with a little extra fabric to spare. It is meant to keep a person slightly warmer when used.

A woolen blanket is a blanket. A blanket is large and usually can fit two people. It is meant to be used for warmth. To be layed down on the floor or used on a bed.

You can remove the pills by shaving carefully with a regular disposable razor. You can also purchase a pill razor or electric shaver through sites that sell knitting supplies- like Patternworks. They also sell something called a sweater stone. It's a lot like a hand size pumice stone, that you lightly rub over the surface to catch the pills.
