Yes. But there are different ways to look at it.

If they closed down the competition, then its a bad thing.

If they helped your town prosper then it is very good. People also like to go to one place for shopping.

Wal mart is cheaper then other stores, it has growen due to that,

Keeping lower prices then other businesses around you is not a monopoly.

A monopoly is when there is no competition so the prices are way marked up.

No, because they do have competition. Like stated earlier, there are companies who do not have competition, like someone was telling me that there is some kind of system computer or gaming where every company uses sony batteries (therefore giving sony the only company with access to the battery business on that market). But maybe that is more of an ethical question....

Going by the definition of monopoly, they aren't one, but in the real sense of the term, they are.. They offer crappier products at lower prices because they pay a lot less for goods than "competitors". They are starting to offer financial planning which will be a second rate service. They don't pay very well and the benefits package is nill. They are a company that is set on keeping their 49.5% markup on every good they offer and will stop at nothing to make money.

Walmart is not a monopoly because it offers value for money. You could always try selling cheaper than walmart. If they don't force you to buy their stuff, it's not monopoly.

For Microsoft's case, it's a monopoly because it installs internet explorer by default.
