i just bought a HP notebook. I have an old(roughly 1995?) Compaq Presario computer. It does not contain a CD burner, and is not internet accessible. It does have USB ports though. Well my question is how would I go about on getting that information from my PC and transferring it into my HP notebook. Its nothing big, mostly old mp3's and pictures. Hopefully suggest a simple and economical method. Also, I want to get rid of the PC. After transferring the data, should I like keep the hard drive? break it? I do not want ANY of my info. leaking around if I throw it away ya know. Is there a proper way disposing of it? I think thats pretty much covers everything. Thanks!

Probably easiest way, since the Presario has a USB port (and is hopefully running Windows 98 or later), is to invest in a USB flash drive. I just got a 1 GIG drive for $19.95 at Wal-mart last week. You should be able to use it to transfer the data and then have a nice drive left over for future use. A good investment.

Look for "disk wipe" program. There are several free ones available. Run a couple on the hard drive and it will destroy any data on it. Most will overwrite every part of the hard drive 3-5 times, destroying anything on it. Then donate the laptop to a charity where they can get some use from it.

Get a $20 USB flash drive to transfer the files.

As for the hard drive, I'd just re-format it. Create a Windows boot floppy disk (or CD, if you have a CD-ROM drive). If you have Windows XP, the disk will give you instructions for re-formatting it. If you don't put in a Windows boot floppy and type "format c:" at the command prompt.

There is fancier disk wiping software out there, but probably not worth it for your situation.

You could use a portable flash drive or an external hard drive to transfer the files.

I think there are special recycling centers that specialize in recycling metal products. Its gonna cost money, but that is a good way to do it.

sounds like floppy disks are your answer.

If you had internet access, I would say to email all the files to yourself. Then you could just pull down your email on the HP and there you go!

When you're ready to dump your pc... check your local area for charities. They might take it for free. To CLEAN it, just delete as much as you can. With your HP, you can see some disk wiper programs that will make it all go away.

As for disposing of it reformat the hard drive and reinstall your OS and donate it to a church or school even Habitat for Humanity is taking them if it still works why not pass it on to someone who can use it. to transfer the info go to circuit city or best buy they have the cables and software you need.

you can get a flash drive and move your files that way...they're pretty cheap nowadays

also, many people choose to keep or destroy their old hard drives because they don't want other people coming across their personal information or the like
