Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow (US title, Smilla's Sense of Snow) by Peter Hoeg.
Starts as the typical whodunit, a small boy dies falling from a roof but his neighbour, who has a particular feeling for snow in all its manifestations, knows there's more to it. The plot is full of twists and turns, the language sings (esp. in the F. David translation) and Smilla's observations on life and humans add a great deal to the text. Smilla, an intelligent but unsociable Greenlander in Copenhagen, is self-isolated, but begins to relate to others thru trying to find the answer to her question...which leads to more questions...
I've never had the chance to read a Danish novel for adults before, this book whetted my appetite for more.
