You might enjoy a book that has already been made into a movie, especially one that you have seen. Then, you can visualize the characters in your mind much easier that way. Also, you can learn a lot about how movies are made that way too - because writing and movie making are two very different art forms, and you'll understand why in most cases the book is better than the movie.

One's that I can suggest are, Patriot Games by Tom Clancy, had a very exciting book ending that was much different than the movie.

Dan Brown's DaVinci code, only so you can have a better understanding of the controversy if you don't already know.

Stephen King's The Stand - that book is so huge that it will give you lots of reading to do between now and January that's for sure.
