can anyone tell me how to fix it please?

The default gateway is usually the IP address of your router. If other internet access works and its only messenger that couplains, I would say it's a configuration issue with messenger. Re-installing it as someone else suggested is probably a good thing to try, unless you want to go through the options and try to figure it out.

My 'default gateway' is the wireless router by which I connect to the internet.
Does this help at all?

pop in the windows xp cd then go to control panel .click on add, remove then click on add windows components ,icon look in the list for windows messenger , un tick then box then click on next it will uninstall it then re-tick the windows messenger box & click next then it will reinstall windows messenge, then go to the microsoft ,wensite and update your windows messenger if you wish to update it
when windows messenger is set back up remove your windows xp ,cd from the cd ,drive

this is a problem with you Internet settings
