Hmmm... Sounds like this is one for your parents really, but a few pointers.
Get a map and have it near you so you can see where the various countries are in relation to each other. Then;
Look up some general history (Break up of the Ottoman Empire, instability in the Balkans, the conflict of Empires British/Austro-Hungarian/German and Russian)
Get specific on the power politics (The German Naval build up to challenge British Naval supremacy, the various alliances Tripple entente vs DreiKaiserBund and then see how once everyone had taken sides it only took one incident to put a match to the powder)
Then look at the supposed trigger (The assasination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by Gavrilo Princip of the Serbian Black Hand separatist movement) look at the fact that ultimata were given and acceded to at the last but the two sides went to war anyway (just needed an excuse) then for top marks look at the continued instability in the Balkans and see how the conflict rumbles on...
Look at the map and trace your finger from the French/German border, up and left to Belgium and then through Belgium round to Paris. Look up the Schlieffen Plan and the Maginot Line.
Look closely at the map and find places like Flanders, Ypres and The Somme. Look up references.
Look on the map for the Balkans. Look at modern Turkey find Gallipoli, look up the references.
Weapons?? Try Wikipedia and then follow links to more specialist sites. Remember that the Armies which fought the early part of the war were full of veterans from the previous century and had equipment to match. Point of interest, the fearsome Maxim machine gun which is held responsible for so many deaths on the various fronts was offered to the British High Command before the Germans but they turned it dow as a waste of ammunition...
Look at casualty statistics. People speak of the machine guns as the big killer but that is a myth. Most died from artillery bombardments, though not always very quickly...
Finally analyse the whole event. What were the aims of the two sides? Were they achieved? How did the world change as a result (hint - they caled it 'The War to end all wars...' oh dear).
Finally look up the Treaty of Versailles and when you have done all of this it should be November, buy a poppy, go to the local War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday and remember the people you have read about. The more people who know the horror of this history, the more chance we have of preventing it happening again.
Just a few thoughts to get you going.

It was a trench war. First use of Tanks, first use of planes in combat, wide spread use of machine guns. The most interesting part of WW1 is how it started. Look into the unification of Germany. The man behind the scenes was Otto Von Bismark, he used the German prime minister and his family like puppets.

Go to your local library (they still exist), you will find hundreds of books on the subject. By the way ignore spasticnation, the Nazis had nothing to do with WW1.
Also ignore rossminton2002 (below) the Americans did enter WW1 in 1917.
